What This Cluster Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use grade-level grammar, word forms, capitalization, and punctuation when speaking and writing. They also notice and correct errors that confuse a sentence's meaning.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students write complete sentences with consistent verb tense and correct subject-verb agreement. They use capitalization, commas, quotation marks, and end punctuation accurately, then edit errors that make meaning unclear.

Common Misconceptions

Students may treat every long group of words as a sentence or join complete thoughts with only a comma. They may shift verb tense, mismatch subjects and verbs, or overlook capitals and end punctuation.

How to Assess It

Give students a three-sentence exit ticket containing a fragment, a verb agreement error, and missing punctuation. Ask them to correct each error and explain one change.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs sentence strips with subjects, predicates, and punctuation marks, then have them build and revise complete sentences.

  2. Display a confusing sentence and ask students to write which grammar or punctuation change would make its meaning clear.

  3. Play Grammar Relay, where teams correct one error at a time in sentences posted around the room.

  4. Have students edit a sample email to the principal so its sentences, verb forms, capitals, and punctuation are clear and correct.
