What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify word groups that begin with a preposition and include its object and any modifiers. They use these groups to add details about place, time, direction, or manner.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can identify the complete word group, name the preposition and its object, and tell what detail it adds. The student can add or move the group without creating an unclear or incomplete sentence.

Common Misconceptions

Students often mark only the preposition instead of the whole phrase, or leave out its object. They may label an infinitive such as "to read" as a prepositional phrase or mistake the phrase's noun for the sentence subject.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: In "After the long rehearsal, the actors waited near the stage," underline both phrases, circle each preposition, and label each detail as time or place.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs a toy animal, a box, and location cards. Students position the animal, then write a matching sentence.

  2. Compare The dog slept with The dog slept under the porch, then discuss which added words answer where.

  3. Run a card sort. Teams place examples under prepositional phrase, infinitive, or neither, then justify one difficult choice.

  4. Use a school map to write directions containing phrases such as past the office, through the hall, and beside the library.
