What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students notice how grammar and mechanics shape meaning in speech and writing. They use complete sentences, consistent verb tense, agreement, capitalization, punctuation, and clear word choices when drafting and revising.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students write complete sentences with correct capitalization, punctuation, verb tense, and subject-verb agreement. They can edit a short passage and explain how their changes make the meaning clearer.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may write fragments or run-on sentences and rely on pauses to choose punctuation. They may shift verb tense, mismatch subjects and verbs, or capitalize common nouns.
How to Assess It
- Give students: “yesterday my friends walks to the park we play soccer.” Ask them to rewrite it correctly and explain two changes.
