What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify the exact words a speaker says and place quotation marks around them. They use capitals, commas, and ending punctuation to show dialogue clearly.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can correct an unpunctuated conversation and explain which words were spoken. They can write original dialogue with accurate capitals, quotation marks, commas, and ending punctuation.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may put quotation marks around the speaker’s name or the whole sentence. They may place commas and periods outside the closing quotation mark. They may also forget to capitalize the first word spoken.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to punctuate these lines: maya said i packed lunch and did you bring water asked leo. Check capitalization, quotation marks, commas, and ending punctuation.

Ask students to write two lines of dialogue between characters who disagree about what game to play.
Run a punctuation relay where teams correct dialogue sentences posted around the room.
Have students interview a classmate, then write one exact quote with the classmate’s name and correct punctuation.
