What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students mark a speaker’s exact words and separate them from narration or a speaker tag. They capitalize and punctuate each line so readers can follow the dialogue.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can write and edit dialogue so the reader knows exactly what was said and who said it. They use capitals, quotation marks, commas, and end punctuation correctly.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may place commas and periods outside quotation marks. They may omit the comma before a speaker tag, capitalize the tag incorrectly, or put narration inside the quotation marks.
How to Assess It
- Give students: liam asked can i borrow your pencil yes ava replied. Have them rewrite it as two correctly punctuated lines of dialogue and underline each speaker tag.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs word strips, punctuation cards, and quotation marks to arrange into a correctly punctuated line of dialogue.
Ask students to explain how punctuation changes between Maya said, "I am ready," and Maya said that she was ready.
Run a dialogue repair relay where teams correct one punctuation or capitalization error on each sentence card.
Have students interview a partner, then write two exact quotes with accurate punctuation and clear speaker tags.
