What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students show a speaker's exact words with quotation marks. They capitalize the first spoken word and place commas correctly around speaker tags.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can punctuate dialogue when the speaker tag comes before or after the spoken words. They can also explain and fix misplaced capitals, commas, and quotation marks.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may place quotation marks around the speaker tag or leave them out completely. They often put commas outside quotation marks, forget to capitalize the first spoken word, or use a period before a closing tag.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Rewrite both sentences correctly: maya said i found the map and i found the map maya said.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs word and punctuation cards, then have them build and check two correctly punctuated lines of dialogue.
Ask students to write two lines characters might say after finding a mysterious box, then explain each punctuation choice.
Play Dialogue Repair Relay, where teams correct one capitalization, comma, or quotation mark error before passing the sentence.
Have students copy a short exchange from a comic strip and rewrite it as punctuated dialogue with speaker tags.
