What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students punctuate quoted speech and dialogue using capitals, quotation marks, commas, and end marks. They add dialogue tags and separate each speaker’s lines clearly.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students can write and edit an exchange between speakers with correct capitals, quotation marks, commas, and end punctuation. They place dialogue tags correctly and begin a new paragraph when the speaker changes.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often put commas outside quotation marks, add both a question mark and comma, or capitalize a dialogue tag after quoted speech. They may also omit the comma before a quotation, change the speaker’s exact words, or place two speakers in one paragraph.
How to Assess It
- Have students punctuate and format this exchange: maya said are you coming no replied jon i have practice. Require correct capitals, quotation marks, commas, end marks, attribution, and speaker paragraphs.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sentence strips with spoken words and dialogue tags, then have them arrange and punctuate two correctly formatted exchanges.
Ask students to explain how punctuation changes “Wait, Sam” and “Wait, Sam?” before writing each phrase in context.
Run an editing relay where teams correct capitals, quotation marks, commas, end marks, and speaker paragraphs in a short dialogue.
Students transcribe six lines from a school interview, adding dialogue tags and standard punctuation while keeping each speaker’s exact words.
