What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify and apply capital letters in shortened forms, adjectives made from names, and official titles. They also notice when a title is used generally and stays lowercase.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly write forms such as “Dr. Lee,” “U.S.,” “African art,” and “Governor Smith.” They can explain why a title before a name is capitalized but a general job name is not.

Common Misconceptions

Students may lowercase proper adjectives, writing “american history” instead of “American history.” They may capitalize every job title or use random capital patterns in abbreviations.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Rewrite correctly, “dr. lee met senator brown at the american history museum.” Then circle each letter you changed.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs sentence cards and capital letter tiles, then have them place tiles over letters that need capitals.

  2. Ask students to explain the capitalization differences in “Mayor Jones spoke” and “The mayor spoke.”

  3. Play Capitalization Relay, where teams correct abbreviation, proper adjective, and title cards one at a time.

  4. Have students find three examples in a school newsletter, local article, or event flyer and copy them with correct capitals.
