What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify words that name specific people, pets, places, days, and months. They use a capital letter at the beginning of each proper noun when writing.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly capitalize specific names, including people, pets, places, days, and months. They can explain that each capitalized word names one particular person, place, or thing.

Common Misconceptions

Students may capitalize every noun, only the first word in a sentence, or words they think are special. They may miss capitals in names of people, pets, places, days, and months.

How to Assess It

Give students this sentence: “maya visits atlanta on monday.” Ask them to rewrite it with correct capitalization and circle each proper noun.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give students noun cards to sort under “special name” and “general name,” then have them fix capitalization on the special-name cards.

  2. Ask students to write one sentence naming a person, place, and day, then explain why each proper noun begins with a capital.

  3. Play Capital Letter Detective by showing short sentences and awarding points when partners find and correct lowercase proper nouns.

  4. Read a simple calendar and local map, then write sentences using correctly capitalized days, months, streets, parks, and city names.
