What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students recognize when a whole word will not fit at the end of a handwritten line. They divide it at an appropriate break, add a hyphen, and continue the word on the next line.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a narrow writing space, a student splits a longer word at a correct break and puts the hyphen at the end of the first line. The student reads both parts as one word and checks uncertain breaks in a dictionary.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may split a word after any letter, put the hyphen at the start of the next line, or leave spaces around it. They may treat the parts as separate words or add a hyphen when the full word fits.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Correct these two lines: “We saw a fan” on line one and “tastic show” on line two. Circle the mark you added.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs narrow paper strips and word cards; students fit sentences on the strips, then place a hyphen where a word must continue.
Display three ways to split “remember” and ask, “Which one is correct, and what should the writer change?”
Play Hyphen Fix-It: teams correct misplaced, missing, or unnecessary hyphens in ten narrow-column sentences and explain each repair.
Have students find five words split across lines in newspapers, copy them exactly, and circle the hyphen at each line ending.
