What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students change common verbs such as go, see, eat, and bring to forms that show an action already happened. They use those forms in complete sentences.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly use forms such as went, saw, ate, brought, and wrote. They can choose the right form in a sentence and explain that the action already happened.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often add -ed and write forms such as “goed” or “eated.” They may also use “seen” without has, have, or had, or confuse “brought” with “brang.”
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Yesterday Mia ___ (go) to the park, ___ (see) a dog, and ___ (bring) it water.” Ask students to complete the sentence.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs present-tense and past-tense verb cards to match, then have students use three matched pairs in sentences.
Ask students to write four sentences about yesterday, using went, saw, ate, and brought once each.
Play verb bingo by calling present-tense verbs while students cover the matching irregular past-tense forms.
Have students write a short news report about a school event, using five irregular verbs to tell what happened.
