What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students tell or write about something that already happened using forms such as went, ate, saw, had, came, and did. They notice that these verbs do not change by simply adding -ed.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a familiar verb and a yesterday context, students choose the correct form, such as went, ate, saw, had, came, or did. They use it correctly in a complete sentence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add -ed to every verb and say goed, eated, or runned. They may also switch between present and past forms while describing one event.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Yesterday I ___ to the park. I ___ lunch. I ___ a bird.” Provide go, eat, and see as choices.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs of present and past verb cards, then have students match go with went, eat with ate, and see with saw.
Ask students to write two sentences about yesterday using went, ate, saw, had, came, or did.
Play verb charades, then have classmates describe each completed action using the correct past form.
Use a class calendar and ask students to report what they did yesterday before describing what they do today.
