What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students combine two related ideas into one sentence using words such as because, when, if, before, and although. They choose a word that clearly shows time, cause, condition, or contrast.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can combine related ideas using words such as because, when, if, before, after, and although. The completed sentence makes sense and uses a comma when the dependent clause comes first.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may treat a dependent clause, such as “Because it rained,” as a complete sentence. They may choose a joining word that does not show the intended relationship or place commas incorrectly.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Combine “The class went inside” and “It began to rain” using “when” or “because.” Underline the joining word.

Ways to Teach It
Give students clause strips and conjunction cards, then have them build complete sentences and read each sentence aloud.
Ask students to write about a canceled recess using because, then explain how the joining word connects their ideas.
Play Conjunction Swap by replacing the joining word in a sentence and deciding whether the new sentence still makes sense.
Have students write two classroom directions using before, after, or when, such as what to do when the bell rings.
