What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students join a complete clause and a dependent clause with words such as because, although, when, if, before, and after. They use the conjunction to show how the two ideas relate and punctuate the sentence correctly.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose conjunctions that clearly show time, cause, condition, or contrast. They write complete sentences and use a comma when the dependent clause comes first.

Common Misconceptions

Students may create a fragment by writing a dependent clause alone. They may choose a conjunction that gives the wrong relationship between ideas. They also may omit the comma after an introductory dependent clause or add an unnecessary comma when it comes second.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Combine “Maya packed an umbrella” and “Rain was expected” using because. Then place the dependent clause first and add correct punctuation.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs clause strips and conjunction cards, then have them build, read, and punctuate three complete sentences.

  2. Ask students to explain how because, although, and when change the meaning between the same two clauses.

  3. Play Conjunction Match: teams pair clause cards, choose a fitting conjunction, and earn a point for correct punctuation.

  4. Have students write playground rules using if, when, before, and after to show conditions and timing.
