What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students combine a complete thought with a dependent clause using words such as because, although, when, if, and since. They select a word that clearly shows time, cause, condition, or contrast.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose conjunctions that show the intended relationship, such as time, cause, condition, or contrast. They can place the dependent clause first or second and punctuate the sentence correctly.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may write a dependent clause as a complete sentence, such as "Because I missed the bus." They may confuse words like because and although with coordinating conjunctions. They also may add commas when the dependent clause comes second.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Combine "The trail was steep" and "We reached the top" into one sentence beginning with although and using correct punctuation.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sentence strips and conjunction cards, then have students build complete sentences and add commas with sticky notes.
Ask students to explain how the meaning changes when because is replaced with although in the same sentence.
Play a matching game where students pair independent clauses, dependent clauses, and conjunctions to make logical sentences.
Have students write three classroom rules using if, when, and because to explain conditions, timing, and reasons.
