What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose and use paired conjunctions to connect words, phrases, or clauses. They keep the connected parts in the same grammatical form.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly use pairs such as both...and, either...or, neither...nor, and not only...but also. They keep joined words, phrases, or clauses parallel and use correct subject-verb agreement.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use only one half of the pair, such as “either” without “or.” They may also join unlike forms, such as a noun with a full clause, or use incorrect subject-verb agreement.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Rewrite the sentence using either...or: Maya may lead the discussion. Jordan may lead the discussion.” Ask students to underline the paired conjunctions.

Ways to Teach It
Give groups sentence strips and conjunction cards, then have them combine matching words, phrases, and clauses into parallel sentences.
Ask students to explain how the meaning changes when “both...and” is replaced with “either...or” in the same sentence.
Play Correlative Conjunction Match by having students pair conjunction cards, then use each pair to complete a sentence correctly.
Have students rewrite two school announcements using correlative conjunctions, such as “Neither backpacks nor phones are allowed during the assembly.”
