What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect words, groups of words, or complete ideas with coordinating conjunctions. They select a conjunction that clearly shows how the connected parts relate.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly connect matching words, phrases, and complete clauses. They choose conjunctions that show addition, contrast, choice, cause, or result and use commas correctly when needed.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose a conjunction that does not match the meaning, such as using “so” when ideas contrast. They may create run-on sentences, add unnecessary commas, or join words that are not parallel.
How to Assess It
- Give students two words, two phrases, and two clauses. Ask them to combine each pair with a suitable conjunction and explain one choice.

Ways to Teach It

Ask students to combine “I wanted to play outside” and “it began to rain,” then explain their conjunction choice.
Play Conjunction Match by having teams pair idea cards with and, but, or, or so and defend each match.
Study classroom rules or signs, then rewrite two related directions as one clear sentence using a coordinating conjunction.
