What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use matched conjunction pairs such as “both...and,” “either...or,” and “neither...nor.” They connect words, phrases, or complete ideas that have equal roles in a sentence.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students select a pair that fits the intended meaning and use both parts correctly. They connect matching words, phrases, or clauses and keep the sentence structure balanced.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may mix pairs, writing “either...and” or “neither...or.” They may omit half of the pair or connect parts that do not follow the same grammatical pattern.
How to Assess It
- Give students two sentence pairs to combine, one with “both...and” and one with “either...or.” Ask them to underline each conjunction pair.

Teams draw a conjunction pair and a sentence frame, then earn a point by completing it with matching sentence parts.
Students revise four school announcements, using paired conjunctions to connect choices, shared items, or two related actions.
