What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students notice how sentences are built and apply common grammar and writing rules when speaking, reading, and writing. They use complete sentences, clear word order, capitals, spacing, and punctuation to communicate meaning.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students write and say complete sentences that make sense. They use capitals, spacing, common verb forms, and ending punctuation correctly in grade-level work.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may write sentence fragments, skip spaces, or use capitals in the middle of words. They may choose punctuation by guessing and overlook subject-verb agreement when speaking or writing.
How to Assess It
- Give students: “my dog run fast” and ask them to rewrite it correctly, then explain two changes they made.

Ask students to write one sentence about recess, then explain how the capital letter and punctuation help the reader.
Play Sentence Fix-It by displaying short sentences with one error and having teams correct each sentence on whiteboards.
Read a classroom sign or lunch menu, then identify how capitals, spacing, and punctuation make its message clear.
