What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students recognize words that show actions, such as run, sing, and carry. They use action verbs in complete spoken and written sentences.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly identify the action verb in a simple sentence. They use a clear action verb to tell what a person, animal, or thing does.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse action verbs with naming words, such as calling “dog” the action in “The dog runs.” They may also write a sentence without a verb or choose a verb that does not match the action.
How to Assess It
- Show a picture of a child kicking a ball. Ask students to write one sentence about the picture and circle the action verb.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs picture cards and word cards, then have them match each pictured action to a verb such as jump, clap, or crawl.
Ask students to finish the prompt, “After school, I _____,” then share and identify the action verb in each sentence.
Play action verb charades, with students acting out a verb while classmates name it and use it in a complete sentence.
Have students list three classroom jobs, then write what each person does, such as “The librarian sorts books.”
