What This Cluster Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use simple grammar and sentence rules to make their speaking and writing clear. They build complete thoughts and use capitals, spaces, and end marks in writing.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students speak in complete, understandable sentences and write simple sentences that others can read. They use basic word order, capital letters, spaces, and end punctuation with growing independence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may write words without spaces or add capital letters in random places. They may leave off end marks, write sentence fragments, or use unclear word order when speaking.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to write, “I see a dog.” Then have them circle the capital letter, point to each space, and name the end mark.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs word cards and punctuation cards to build, read, and fix a sentence with a capital letter, spaces, and an end mark.
Ask, “What helps a reader understand your sentence?” then have students write one example and circle each convention they used.
Play Sentence Doctor: display short sentences with one mistake, and let students earn a point by correcting and explaining it.
Have students make a classroom sign, such as “Wash your hands,” using readable words, capitals, spacing, and punctuation.
