What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use words that describe people, places, animals, and things. They also use words that tell how an action happens in speech and simple writing.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can say or write a sentence such as, “The fuzzy dog runs quickly.” The student can point to the word describing the dog and the word describing its action.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may call every describing word an adjective, even when it tells how an action happens. They may also use an adjective form, such as “quick,” instead of “quickly” to describe an action.
How to Assess It
- Show a picture of a dog running. Ask, “Write or say a sentence that tells what the dog looks like and how it runs.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs a toy animal and word cards, then have them build and act out sentences such as, “The fuzzy bear walks slowly.”
Show a playground picture and ask, “What words describe the children, and what words tell how they are moving?”
Play Adjective or Adverb Corners by reading a sentence and having students move to the corner matching the highlighted word’s job.
During cleanup, ask students to describe one classroom object and explain how a classmate carries or puts it away.
