What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students recognize words that name actions, such as run, clap, and jump. They use these words to tell what a person or animal does.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given a picture, the student names the action and uses it in a complete oral sentence. The student can find the action word in a short sentence, such as "The dog runs."
Common Misconceptions
- Students may name the person or object instead of what it is doing. They may give a sound, feeling, or describing word rather than an action. Some name an action but leave it out of their sentence.
How to Assess It
- Show a picture of a child jumping and ask, "What is the child doing?" Have each student say a full sentence and identify the action word.

Ways to Teach It
Place action picture cards in a bag; students draw one, perform it, and classmates name the action word.
Show a playground picture and ask, "What are the children doing?" Record student sentences and underline each action word together.
Play Simon Says using hop, clap, spin, and crawl; students repeat each action word before moving.
During recess, students observe one classmate, then report the action in a sentence such as, "Mia runs."
