What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students name a single person, place, animal, or thing and name more than one. They change the noun correctly when speaking, including common forms like “dogs” and “children.”

What Mastery Looks Like

A student says “one book” and “three books” correctly in conversation. The student also uses familiar irregular forms, such as “children,” when speaking.

Common Misconceptions

Students may use the same noun for one and many, such as saying “two dog.” They may add an extra ending to irregular nouns, such as “childs” or “mouses.”

How to Assess It

Show pictures of one cat, three cats, one child, and two children. Ask each student to describe each picture aloud using a complete sentence.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs classroom objects, then have students sort them into one and many groups and name each group aloud.

  2. Ask, “What do you have one of at home, and what do you have many of?” Partners answer in complete sentences.

  3. Play Singular-Plural Toss: say a noun while tossing a beanbag, and the catcher gives its matching one or many form.

  4. Have the snack helper report the daily count using phrases such as “one box,” “five cups,” and “twelve crackers.”
