What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students change a noun when it names more than one and adding s does not work. They use special forms such as child and children or mouse and mice when speaking and writing.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly name one item and more than one item using special plural forms. They use words such as children, men, mice, teeth, and feet in complete sentences.
Common Misconceptions
- Students often add s to every noun, producing forms such as childs, mouses, and foots. They may also use a singular form after a number, as in three child.
How to Assess It
- Show pictures of one child, two children, one mouse, and three mice. Ask students to label each picture and write one sentence using a plural label.

Ways to Teach It
Give students picture cards to sort into one and more than one groups, then label each card with the correct noun.
Show one tooth and several teeth, then ask students to write what changed in the word and what changed in the picture.
Play a matching game where students pair singular noun cards with plural cards, such as mouse and mice.
Use a class photo to count children, people, feet, and teeth, then record the totals in complete sentences.
