What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students recognize nouns that change spelling instead of taking the usual -s or -es ending when naming more than one. They use forms such as children, feet, mice, teeth, geese, men, and women in speech and writing.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given singular nouns in sentences, students supply correct forms without writing childs, foots, or mouses. They revise sentences so nouns agree with clue words such as one, two, many, and several.

Common Misconceptions

Students often add -s to every noun, producing forms such as childs, foots, and mouses. Some confuse plural endings with possessive apostrophes. Others know a word pair alone but write errors such as two child in sentences.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Complete “One child lost one tooth. Two ___ lost two ___.” Then write a sentence using the plural of mouse.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs of singular and plural noun cards, then have students match child to children, mouse to mice, and tooth to teeth.

  2. Ask students to explain why “three mouses” sounds wrong, then write a corrected sentence and identify the clue word.

  3. Play Irregular Plural Bingo by calling singular nouns while students cover the matching plural forms on their boards.

  4. Display a family or class photo, and have students write captions using one child, several children, one man, and two men.
