What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use this, that, these, and those to replace nouns. They match each choice to the noun’s number and its distance from the speaker.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose the correct word based on whether the noun is singular or plural, nearby or farther away. They use it alone to replace a clear noun or noun phrase.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may pair a singular pronoun with a plural noun, as in “this are my shoes.” They may confuse distance words or use a pronoun with no clear noun to replace. They may also write “this book” and mislabel “this” as a pronoun.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Complete “One apple is in my hand. ___ is ripe” and “Several apples are on the far table. ___ are ripe.” Then write one original example with a clear noun reference.

Ways to Teach It
Place single and grouped objects near and far from students, then have partners point and name each set with the matching pronoun.
Ask, “How does a speaker’s distance from an object affect word choice?” Students explain with two paired examples.
Label four corners this, that, these, and those; read number and distance clues, then have students move to the correct corner.
Give students a store display photo and ask them to write four customer comments about nearby and distant products.
