What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students select and use a reflexive pronoun when the subject acts on itself or does something without help. They make the pronoun agree with the person or group named.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly use words such as myself, herself, ourselves, and themselves in sentences. They match each reflexive pronoun to its noun or subject and avoid nonstandard forms.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use nonstandard forms such as “hisself” or “theirselves.” They may also choose a reflexive pronoun that does not match the subject, or use one where an object pronoun belongs.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Maya taught ___ to juggle. The twins made lunch by ___. Write the correct pronoun in each blank and explain one choice.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs pronoun cards and sentence strips, then have them match each subject with the correct reflexive pronoun and read the sentence aloud.
Ask students to write three sentences about tasks they can do by themselves, then circle each reflexive pronoun.
Play Pronoun Relay, where teams complete sentence cards with the correct reflexive pronoun and earn a point for explaining the match.
Create classroom safety reminders using reflexive pronouns, such as “Protect yourself by carrying scissors with the points down.”
