What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use words such as each, everyone, both, few, and some with matching verbs. They decide whether the pronoun is singular, plural, or dependent on context.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly write “Everyone has,” “Both have,” and “Some of the water is.” They can explain whether the indefinite pronoun is singular, plural, or depends on the noun that follows.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may match the verb to the nearest noun, writing “Each of the players are ready.” They may also treat every indefinite pronoun as singular, writing “Both is correct.”
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: Complete “Each of the puppies ___ a collar,” “Both ___ ready,” and “Some of the milk ___ spilled,” then explain one choice.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs pronoun cards and verb cards, then have them build and read correct sentences such as “Neither is” and “Many are.”
Ask students to explain why “Each of the books is useful” uses “is” even though “books” is plural.
Play Agreement Relay, where teams correct one sentence at a time and name the word that controls the verb.
Have students edit classroom announcements containing errors, such as “Everyone need a pencil” and “Both class is visiting the library.”
