What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose pronouns that match the nouns they replace in number and person. They also revise sentences when a pronoun does not clearly or correctly match its antecedent.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students consistently choose singular pronouns for singular antecedents and plural pronouns for plural antecedents. They can identify the antecedent and fix unclear or incorrect matches in sentences.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use a singular pronoun for a plural antecedent, as in “The players tied his shoes.” They may also match the pronoun to the nearest noun instead of the noun it replaces.
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: “Maria and Tia packed her lunches. Rewrite the sentence correctly, then circle the antecedent and underline the pronoun.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs noun cards and pronoun cards, then have students match them and read each correct pair in a complete sentence.
Ask students to explain what is wrong with “The dogs chased its ball,” then rewrite the sentence and name the antecedent.
Play Pronoun Match Relay, where teams replace highlighted nouns with matching pronouns in sentences posted around the room.
Have students edit a short school announcement, checking that every pronoun clearly matches the person, place, thing, or group it replaces.
