What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students identify pronouns whose antecedents are missing, unclear, or could refer to more than one noun. They revise each sentence so the intended person, place, thing, or idea is named clearly.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student can explain why a pronoun such as “it,” “they,” “this,” or “which” is unclear in context. The student replaces it with a precise noun or rewrites the sentence without changing its meaning.

Common Misconceptions

Students may assume the closest noun is always the pronoun's antecedent. They may treat words like “this,” “that,” and “it” as clear without checking the context. Some replace every pronoun instead of revising only unclear references.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: “When Maya spoke with Tiana, she said the project was late.” Write two clear revisions, one naming Maya as speaker and one naming Tiana.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs noun cards and pronoun cards; students build sentences, then swap one card to create and repair an unclear reference.

  2. Post “Jordan texted Alex after he left”; students discuss both meanings, then write two revisions that make each meaning clear.

  3. Play Pronoun Detective: teams underline vague pronouns in sentence strips and earn a point only after writing a clear correction.

  4. Use directions from a school notice or product label; students circle unclear pronouns and revise the wording for a real audience.
