What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use indefinite pronouns such as everyone, each, both, few, and several as sentence subjects. They choose verbs and later pronouns that agree in number.

What Mastery Looks Like

A student writes “Everyone has a pencil” and “Several have pencils” without being distracted by nearby nouns. The student uses context correctly in “All the milk is gone” and “All the cookies are gone.”

Common Misconceptions

Students often treat everyone or each as plural because those words refer to many people. They may match the verb to a nearby noun, writing “Each of the dogs are barking.” They may assume all indefinite pronouns take the same kind of verb.

How to Assess It

Use this exit ticket: Choose the correct verb in “Each of the players (has/have) a jersey” and “Several (was/were) late,” then explain one choice.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs cards labeled everyone, each, both, few, and several to sort as singular or plural, then match with is or are.

  2. Ask students to write and discuss: “Why does everyone take has, even when it names many people?”

  3. Play an agreement relay where teams correct one projected sentence, explain the correction, and pass the marker to the next player.

  4. Have students revise a class announcement containing five agreement errors, then post the corrected version by the classroom door.
