What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students put small helper words before nouns when speaking and writing. They use words such as a, an, the, my, her, this, and those to show which item, how many, or who owns it.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a picture or object, a student says or writes a clear phrase such as an egg, my shoe, this block, or those blocks. The student matches this and that with one item, and these and those with more than one.

Common Misconceptions

Students may leave out the word before a noun, saying “I have pencil.” They may say “a apple,” confuse my with mine, or pair this with plural nouns. They may also use these before a singular noun.

How to Assess It

Show pictures of an apple, a child wearing a hat, one nearby block, and several distant blocks. Ask students to complete aloud: “I see ___ apple,” “___ hat,” “___ block,” and “___ blocks.”

Ways to Teach It

  1. Place one crayon, several blocks, and students’ backpacks on a table, then have children describe each item using a, the, my, this, or those.

  2. Show a picture of a messy bedroom and ask, “Which words fit before bed, socks, and teddy bear, and why?”

  3. Play Determiner Match by pairing noun picture cards with cards labeled a, an, my, this, these, that, and those.

  4. During snack, students request items with complete phrases, such as an apple, my cup, this napkin, or those crackers.
