What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students choose the right small word before a noun to show whether it is general, specific, owned, nearby, or farther away. They match choices to singular and plural nouns.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students independently choose words that match the noun’s number, sound, ownership, and distance. They use them correctly in complete sentences and fix errors such as this pencils or a elephant.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may choose a or an by the first letter instead of the first sound. They may mix up this with these, that with those, or add apostrophes to words like its and their.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “I ate ___ apple. ___ books across the room are new. Maya packed ___ backpack.” Students fill the blanks and circle each noun.

Post a orange, an orange, this shoes, and these shoes; ask students to choose each correct phrase and explain why.
Play Determiner Match: students draw a noun card, race to select a fitting word card, and use the phrase in a sentence.
Have students write three lost-and-found labels using phrases such as this jacket, those gloves, and her lunchbox.
