What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students select small words that come before nouns to show which one, how many, or who owns something. They use a, an, the, ownership words, and pointing words correctly in speech and writing.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students choose words that match the noun’s number, location, and owner. They write and say clear phrases such as “an orange,” “those books,” and “her pencil.”

Common Misconceptions

Students may use a before a vowel sound, as in “a apple,” or mix up this and these. They may also confuse ownership words, such as his and her, or write it’s when they mean its.

How to Assess It

Give students the sentence, “___ dog carried ___ bone to ___ yard.” Ask them to fill each blank with a word that makes sense, then explain one choice.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Place classroom objects near and far, then have students label them with this, that, these, or those.

  2. Ask students to write three sentences about a backpack using the, my, and those, then explain how each word changes the meaning.

  3. Play Determiner Match by pairing noun cards with cards such as a, an, his, our, this, and these.

  4. Read a simple store flyer and circle words before product names, then discuss how they show number, location, or ownership.
