What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students decide whether a sentence tells, asks, or shows strong feeling. They place the matching mark at the end and read the sentence with a fitting voice.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students independently add the correct ending mark to a simple statement, question, or excited sentence. They use their voice to show how each sentence should sound.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may put a period after every sentence or choose marks based on excitement alone. They may confuse a question with a statement that contains a question word.
How to Assess It
- Give students three sentences: “The dog is big,” “Where is my hat,” and “Watch out.” Ask them to add and name each ending mark.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sentence cards and punctuation cards, then have them match each sentence with its correct ending mark.
Read “Can you jump,” then ask students to explain which ending mark fits and how they know.
Play punctuation corners by reading a sentence aloud while students move to the period, question mark, or exclamation mark sign.
Examine classroom signs and book covers, then list where each ending mark appears and what the writer is communicating.
