What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students use nouns to name people, places, animals, and things. They tell the difference between a general name, such as dog, and a special name, such as Spot.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students correctly use general names such as girl, city, and dog. They use specific names such as Ava, Atlanta, and Spot, with capital letters when writing.

Common Misconceptions

Students may think every noun is a special name or that all special names name people. They may also confuse a capitalized first word with a special name.

How to Assess It

Show a picture of a girl named Mia holding a cat named Pepper. Ask students to say and write two general names and two special names.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Have students sort picture and word cards into general names and special names, then explain one choice to a partner.

  2. Ask, "What special names belong in our classroom?" List student names, the school name, and names of class pets or toys.

  3. Play Name Match by having students pair each general name card, such as dog, with a fitting special name card, such as Max.

  4. Use a local map to find general names like city and park, then identify special names such as Atlanta and Piedmont Park.
