What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students tell the difference between a general naming word and the name of a specific person, place, animal, or thing. They capitalize specific names.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students sort general naming words from specific names. They use capital letters when writing names of people, pets, places, days, and months.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may capitalize every word that names a person, place, or thing. They may also write specific names, such as Maya or Atlanta, with lowercase letters.
How to Assess It
- Give students four words: girl, Sofia, city, and Macon. Ask them to label each word and correct any missing capital letters.
