What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students tell whether a noun names a general person, place, animal, or thing, or gives a specific name. They use capital letters for specific names.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given words such as city, Atlanta, teacher, and Ms. Lee, students sort them accurately. In their own writing, they capitalize specific names but not general labels.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may capitalize every noun or forget capitals in names. They may label “dog” as specific because it refers to one dog in a picture.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: Circle each noun, label it general or specific, and fix capitals: “My friend maya went to piedmont park with her dog.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs word cards such as school, Lincoln Elementary, girl, and Ava, then have them sort and correct capitalization.
Ask, “How does changing park to Grant Park make the sentence more exact?” and have students explain in writing.
Play Noun Match: students pair a general noun card with a specific name card, then earn a point by writing both correctly.
Use a local map or school directory to find general labels and specific names, then record each in a two column chart.
