What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify nouns that name groups, such as team and flock, and nouns that name ideas or feelings, such as courage and joy. They choose these nouns to make sentences precise.
What Mastery Looks Like
- A student can sort examples by noun type and explain each choice. The student can write complete sentences that use both kinds correctly.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may label any plural noun as a group noun or confuse a group noun with the members it names. They may think nouns name only objects and miss nouns that name feelings, qualities, or ideas.
How to Assess It
- Give students the words class, pencils, honesty, and excited. Ask them to select the group noun and idea noun, then use each in a sentence.

Ways to Teach It

Ask students to write about a time a group showed courage, using one group noun and one idea noun.
Play Noun Match: students pair picture cards of groups with labels like flock, team, audience, or herd.
Read a school announcement and replace vague words with precise nouns such as committee, kindness, or responsibility.
