What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students make regular nouns mean more than one by adding -s or -es. They notice word endings and choose the correct plural ending when speaking and writing.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly write and say common regular plurals, such as cats, buses, dishes, and boxes. They choose -s or -es without a word bank and use the plural noun correctly in a sentence.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add only -s to every noun, writing “boxs” or “dishs.” They may also use an apostrophe in a plural, such as “cat’s,” or add -es when only -s is needed.
How to Assess It
- Give students this exit ticket: “Write the plural of cat, bus, dish, and fox. Then use one plural in a sentence.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs picture cards and letter tiles, then have them build singular and plural nouns by adding -s or -es.
Ask students to explain why cat becomes cats but bus becomes buses, using both words in complete sentences.
Play a sorting relay where students place noun cards under Add -s or Add -es, then write each plural.
Use a classroom supply list, changing one desk, box, and brush into amounts greater than one.
