What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students form plural nouns by replacing a final y with ies when a consonant comes before the y. They spell pairs such as baby and babies correctly.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly write babies, puppies, and cherries from singular nouns. They explain that a final y after a consonant changes to ies.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add s directly, writing babys or puppys. They may also change vowel plus y words incorrectly, writing toies instead of toys.
How to Assess It
- Give an exit ticket with baby, puppy, cherry, and toy. Ask students to write each plural and circle the words where y changed to ies.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs word cards and letter tiles, then have them replace the final y with ies to build plural nouns.
Ask students to write how one puppy becomes several puppies, then explain what changed in the spelling.
Play a sorting relay where students place nouns under Add s or Change y to ies and write each plural.
Use a pretend pet shop list, asking students to change one puppy, bunny, and canary into groups of each animal.
