What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students combine two words into a shorter form and place an apostrophe where letters were removed. They add an apostrophe and s to show that one person, animal, or thing owns something.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Given phrases such as do not and the hat of Mia, students write don't and Mia's hat. They can tell whether an apostrophe marks missing letters or shows ownership.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may write dont, place the apostrophe between two whole words, or use it as decoration. They may add apostrophes to every plural noun or confuse dog's with dogs.
How to Assess It
- Exit ticket: Write the shorter form of “is not,” then rewrite “the bone belonging to the dog” using an apostrophe. Label each apostrophe missing letters or ownership.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs word cards, scissors, and apostrophe stickers; students remove letters, join the cards, and cover the gap with a sticker.
Students write one sentence with can't and one with Ana's, then explain what each apostrophe shows to a partner.
Play Apostrophe Sort: students place cards under Missing Letters, One Owner, or No Apostrophe, then correct any misplaced cards.
Examine a lunch menu, class note, or book page; students find apostrophes and mark whether each shows missing letters or ownership.
