What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students show ownership by more than one person, animal, place, or thing. They place the apostrophe after regular plural nouns ending in s and before s with irregular plurals.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students write phrases such as players' uniforms and children's games correctly. They explain why the apostrophe follows the s in players' but comes before the s in children's.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may use an apostrophe to make a noun plural, as in book's. They may write dogs's bowls instead of dogs' bowls, or childrens' books instead of children's books.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: Rewrite “the backpacks belonging to the students” as a possessive noun phrase. Look for “the students' backpacks.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs noun cards and object cards, then have them build and label phrases such as teachers' desks and children's coats.
Ask students to explain the apostrophe placement in cats' toys and mice's holes, using the noun's plural form as evidence.
Play an apostrophe relay where teams correct phrases such as the dogs bowls, the babies blankets, and the mens shoes.
Have students make classroom signs for shared items, such as students' folders, teachers' supplies, and children's books.
