What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students choose the correct word based on its meaning and job in a sentence. They use context clues, spelling, and sentence structure to check their choice.

What Mastery Looks Like

Students select the right word for a sentence and explain their choice using meaning or grammar. They use the words correctly in their own writing and catch mistakes when editing.

Common Misconceptions

Students may choose a word because it sounds right without checking its meaning. They may confuse possession with place or omit the apostrophe in “they’re.” They may also use “advice” and “advise” as the same part of speech.

How to Assess It

Give students these blanks: “I have ___ books,” “___ going home,” “Put it over ___,” and “Please ___ me.” Ask them to fill each blank and explain one choice.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs word cards and sentence strips, then have them place each sentence under the correct word and explain their matches.

  2. Ask students to write three sentences using “there,” “their,” and “they’re,” then compare how each word works with a partner.

  3. Play Confused Word Bingo by reading sentence clues while students cover the matching word on their boards.

  4. Have students edit a mock class announcement containing mistakes with “to,” “too,” “two,” “advice,” and “advise.”
