What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use sentence meaning and grammar clues to choose among commonly confused words. They also find and correct these errors in their own writing and sample sentences.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose the correct word in new sentences without relying on guessing. They can explain their choice using meaning, sentence role, or the expanded form “they are.”
Common Misconceptions
- Students often choose a word by sound instead of checking its meaning and job in the sentence. They may overlook the apostrophe in “they’re” or confuse the noun “advice” with the verb “advise.”
How to Assess It
- Use this exit ticket: “I have ___ dogs. ___ going to put ___ bowls over ___, ___. Please ___ me and give me good ___.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs word cards and sentence strips, then have them place each word into the sentence where its meaning and grammar fit.
Ask students to explain in writing how “their,” “there,” and “they’re” work differently in three related sentences.
Play a choice-card game where students hold up the correct word for each projected sentence and earn a point for an accurate explanation.
Have students proofread a mock text message containing confused-word errors, then rewrite it correctly before sending it to a partner.
