What This Standard Means

What Students Need to Do

Students make the -ing form and common past participle forms of verbs, including irregular forms such as gone and written. They use them with helping verbs and to describe nouns.

What Mastery Looks Like

Given a base verb, a student produces the correct form and uses it in a complete sentence. The student can write is running, has written, and the cracked screen correctly.

Common Misconceptions

Students often write has went or has wrote because they substitute simple past forms for past participles. They may omit a helping verb, as in She running. They may also write runing or stoped.

How to Assess It

Exit ticket: Complete “Maya is ___ to school” using skip and “Maya has ___ home” using go. Underline each complete verb phrase.

Ways to Teach It

  1. Give pairs sentence strips with subjects, helping verbs, and verb forms; students build correct sentences and explain each choice.

  2. Ask students to describe a storm scene using one present participle and one past participle, then underline both.

  3. Play Participle Match: students pair base verb cards with forms such as running, carried, and broken, then use each pair in a sentence.

  4. Use local news photo captions; students revise each caption to include a clear participle, such as flooded streets or cheering fans.
