What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students identify opening words that give time, place, condition, or other context before the main clause. They place a comma where that opening phrase or clause ends.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students correctly punctuate sentences such as “After the bell rang, we packed our bags” and “During recess, Maya found a bracelet.” They can identify where the opener ends and the main clause begins.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may add a comma after every first word, even when it belongs to the main clause. They may also miss the comma after a long opener or confuse this use with a comma splice.
How to Assess It
- Give students: “Before the game started we found our seats.” Ask them to add the comma, underline the opener, and explain their choice.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs color-coded sentence strips for openers and main clauses, then have them join each pair and place a comma card correctly.
Ask students to compare “After dinner, we played cards” with “We played cards after dinner” and explain why only one needs a comma.
Play a punctuation relay where teams add comma magnets to sentences with introductory phrases or clauses and justify each placement.
Have students edit three morning announcement sentences that begin with time, place, or condition details before reading them aloud.
