What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students use words such as wow, oh, yikes, and hooray to show a sudden feeling or reaction. They punctuate mild and strong interjections correctly in sentences.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students identify interjections in sentences and explain the feeling or reaction each one shows. They use interjections naturally and choose a comma or exclamation point to match the strength of the feeling.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may confuse interjections with adjectives or mistake every exclamation for an interjection. They may also overuse exclamation points or forget the comma after a mild interjection.
How to Assess It
- Ask students to complete: “____, I forgot my homework!” Then have them write a second sentence with a mild interjection followed by a comma.

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sentence strips and interjection cards such as wow, oh, and yikes, then have them match each card to a fitting sentence.
Ask students to rewrite “I cannot believe we won” with two different interjections and explain how each changes the speaker’s tone.
Play Interjection Charades, where students draw a feeling card, say a matching interjection, and classmates name the feeling.
Examine interjections in comic strips, then have students add speech bubbles with fitting interjections and punctuation to a new panel.
