What This Standard Means
What Students Need to Do
- Students connect ideas using words that refer to people, things, places, times, or reasons. They select the word that matches the noun or detail being described.
What Mastery Looks Like
- Students choose words such as who, whose, which, that, where, when, and why to connect related ideas. Their sentences are complete, clear, and free of repeated subjects.
Common Misconceptions
- Students may write a doubled subject, such as “the runner who she won.” They may confuse whose with who’s, or use where for time and when for place. Some use what instead of that or which.
How to Assess It
- Give this exit ticket: “Combine each pair into one sentence: I thanked the student. The student found my pencil. Friday is the day. We take spelling tests then.”

Ways to Teach It
Give pairs sentence strips and connector cards, then have students combine each pair into one clear sentence.
Ask students to explain which word fits: “The park is the place ___ we practice,” and defend their choice.
Play connector bingo by reading sentence frames while students cover matching words such as who, whose, where, when, and why.
Have students write four school guide sentences describing people, places, times, and reasons using a different connector in each sentence.
